Room & Floor Diagrams
About
The room diagram application is a product that allows event organizers to set up their event space and build floor layouts with components such as tables, seating, podiums, and more. It is slightly configurable, allowing users to build their own shapes, rather than relying on a shipped list of components.
The floor plan application was built to support large-scale expos and conventions who needed to map out booths on the event show floor, mark exits and other building features, and allow adding services, orders, or payments directly from the same interface.
Role
For both projects, I was the first designer point of contact, and assisted the product teams in feature definition and requirement gathering with clients. I built interactive prototypes in Axure RP to meet the user expectations and correctly plot out the workflows needed in the application. These prototypes were then reviewed with visual designers and development teams for implementation. I handed off both of these projects to incoming designers, but I am proud of the foundations set.

Challenges:
The tech stack used to build these projects was often sluggish and not always able to meet design needs or user experience expectations. The projects have since been adjusted or modified over time, and don’t always reflect the original design goals or product intentions. Many times, there were too many things these applications had to do all at once, rather than doing a few things well.
Result
The applications are used by clients today to map out their show floors and room setups. Each diagramming tool continues to be maintained today. Many exhibition organizers live and breathe in the floor planner for their day-to-day operations.
